Stone Age megastructure found submerged in the Baltic Sea wasn’t formed by nature, scientists say

In 2021, scientists discovered a megastructure made of over 1,600 stones submerged in the Baltic Sea off the coast of Germany.

Analysis determined it was likely a hunting structure used by Stone Age communities over 10,000 years ago to herd reindeer migrating across the landscape.

The wall stretched over half a mile and was used to funnel reindeer into an area where they could be more easily caught with spears, bows and arrows.

Researchers conducted surveys, sediment sampling and 3D modeling to understand how the landscape has changed since the last ice age.

Rising sea levels since the end of the last ice age would have submerged the original site where the structure was strategically placed along a lakeshore.

This provides insight into how highly mobile hunter-gatherer groups organized and territorial behavior not previously believed about them.

Other ancient hunting structures have been found elsewhere but this is a first for the Baltic Sea region.
