Jennifer Lopez had plenty of people doubt her new film. Its director credits Ben Affleck with ‘helping guide the confidence’ she needed to make it.

Jennifer Lopez self-funded a $20 million film called “This Is Me…Now” to accompany her new album of the same name. The film explores her relationships and journey to self-love.

Director Dave Meyers says Lopez was determined to make the film despite doubts from friends. She wrote the check herself because she believed in the project.

The film references Lopez’s relationship struggles, including an abusive past relationship depicted in one scene. However, Lopez says it’s not fully autobiographical and is more “meta.”

Ben Affleck, Lopez’s boyfriend, was influential as a “mentor” who helped boost Lopez’s confidence in ventures new to her like writing and producing. But Affleck himself does not appear in the film.

Affleck appears in an unexpected cameo wearing prosthetics in a nod to Tom Cruise’s role in “Tropic Thunder.”

The hardest scenes to film were the first day shooting the “abusive relationship” scene, and coordinating Jane Fonda and other actors for a “zodiac council” scene over 3 months.

Meyers says Lopez is still hugely professional but now more willing to be vulnerable about her personal life and pain than in the past when they worked together.
