Alibaba Cloud’s Yitian 710 processor has been found to be the most efficient Arm-based server CPU for database tasks in large cloud computing environments, according to a new study.
The 128-core Yitian 710 outperformed other Arm-based chips and ran circles around Intel’s Xeon Platinum processor in specific database workload tests.
However, the Arm-based servers struggled to match Xeon’s performance in OLAP, machine learning inference and blockchain tasks, due to unoptimized software, lower clock speeds and subpar core-level performance.
While Arm servers spent twice as much time in system calls compared to Xeon servers, the study concluded they show great potential given their lower cloud computing prices.
The Yitian 710 in particular utilizes a newer Arm architecture and faster DDR5 RAM that gives it advantages over some competitor CPUs.
For workloads where performance is not critical, the Yitian 710 and Arm-based servers like AWS Graviton could be better choices due to their lower costs in cloud environments.
