OceanGate co-founder Guillermo Söhnlein is organizing an expedition with his company Blue Marble Exploration to explore Dean’s Blue Hole, a deep underwater sinkhole located in the Bahamas.
Dean’s Blue Hole is described as the “portal to hell” and is one of the deepest underwater sinkholes in the world at 663 feet deep. It has reportedly claimed many lives over the years in accidents.
Last year, the submersible vessel Titan, operated by OceanGate, imploded 1.5 hours into a dive to the Titanic wreck, killing 5 people onboard. Söhnlein had previously co-founded OceanGate but left in 2013.
Blue Marble’s expedition will use certified submersibles to be the first manned descent into Dean’s Blue Hole, equipped with lights and drones. They expect to encounter challenges like extreme pressure and darkness.
Locals believe the sinkhole is haunted and the devil lives in its depths. The expedition prepares to possibly find human remains.
While early posts said tourists could join, Söhnlein confirmed it will only include trained professionals for safety, unlike the ill-fated OceanGate Titan mission.
Söhnlein still believes in continuing deep ocean exploration to honor those who died on the Titan and learn from last year’s accident.
