Elon Musk’s liquid-cooled ‘Gigafactory’ AI data centers get a plug from Supermicro CEO — Tesla and xAI’s new supercomputers will have 350,000 Nvidia GPUs, both will be online within months

Elon Musk is building two large AI supercomputer clusters – one at Tesla’s Gigafactory and another for his company xAI.
The Gigafactory cluster will contain 50,000 Nvidia GPUs and is nearing completion. It is expected to draw up to 500MW of power.
xAI’s supercomputer will contain over 300,000 Nvidia GPUs and is also nearly completed.
Both clusters will use direct liquid cooling from Supermicro to improve efficiency and reduce costs compared to air cooling.
Supermicro’s CEO Charles Liang met with Musk and supports his use of their liquid cooling technology at the large scale needed for the AI data centers.
Adopting liquid cooling across data centers could save an estimated 20 billion trees worth of energy according to Liang.
The two massive Musk-led supercomputer projects aim to advance AI capabilities for Tesla’s autonomous driving and xAI’s conversational AI system Grok. They are anticipated to come online in the coming months.
