– The US Treasury Department imposed sanctions on an Iranian company called Kimia Biopharm and two of its managers for developing chemical weapons in Iran.
– According to the US State Department, Kimia Biopharm has developed and tested chemical weapons like sulfur mustard gas which violate international law.
– Under Secretary of the Treasury Brian Nelson said Iran’s development of chemical weapons raises concerns about its intentions and threatens regional stability.
– Sanctions aim to cut off Kimia Biopharm’s access to the US financial system and freeze any of its assets under US jurisdiction.
– Iran denies such accusations and claims its military capability is aimed at deterring threats.
– The US action comes amid ongoing talks between Iran and world powers over reviving a 2015 nuclear deal that former president Trump abandoned. Negotiations have stalled in part over Iran’s insistence the US removes its terrorism designation.
