– An Iranian labor union condemned the death sentence given to Sharifeh Mohammadi, an imprisoned labor activist, by an Islamic Revolutionary Court in Rasht.
– Mohammadi was sentenced to death on charges of “rebellion” which authorities alleged was due to her membership in an armed Kurdish opposition group, accusations that Mohammadi and others have denied.
– The labor union called the death sentence “inhumane and unjust” and said Mohammadi was subjected to torture during her detention.
– Many Iranian and international human rights groups have also condemned the sentence. Protests have been held in Iran and elsewhere calling for her release.
– The labor union emphasized rights to form unions and engage in activism. It said the death sentence will not deter the workers’ movement from pursuing its goals.
– It viewed the crackdown as part of tensions between the public and government intensified by recent protest movements in Iran. It called for reversing death sentences for political prisoners.
