Iran’s Revolutionary Guard said a short-range projectile killed Hamas political chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran on Wednesday.
They blamed Israel for carrying out the attack, saying a rocket with a 15-pound warhead was used to target Haniyeh’s residence.
The Guard accused the U.S. of supporting the attack.
Israel has not confirmed or denied involvement, but had pledged retaliation against Hamas leaders over an attack in October.
The assassination has raised fears of wider conflict between Israel and Iran if Iran retaliates.
In April, Iran launched missiles and drones at Israel in response to an Israeli strike in Syria that killed Iranian generals.
Iran supports anti-Israeli militant groups like Hamas and does not recognize Israel’s right to exist.
