The Israeli foreign minister said that Israel expects countries like the UK and France to join Israel in responding militarily to any attack from Iran, including “not only in defense, but also in attacking significant targets in Iran.”
However, the French and British foreign ministers downplayed this idea. The French minister said discussing retaliation would be inappropriate while diplomatic talks are occurring.
A UK spokesperson stressed the need to de-escalate tensions and for all parties to refrain from violence that could jeopardize ceasefire negotiations.
A senior US official warned of “cataclysmic” consequences if Iran attacks Israel, but did not confirm or deny US involvement in any counterattacks. They said the US is prepared for any contingency and will defend Israel.
Tensions are high as negotiations continue for a ceasefire and hostage deal in the Israel-Hamas conflict, against the backdrop of fears Iran may retaliate for Israel’s alleged assassination of a Hamas leader in Tehran.
