Huawei’s new Mate XT foldable smartphone has received over 3 million pre-orders since pre-orders started over the weekend.
The Mate XT is the world’s first tri-fold smartphone with a dual hinged folding design.
While details are still limited, it is expected to have 16GB RAM and internal storage options of 512GB or 1TB.
Pre-orders on Huawei’s e-commerce site Vmall.com will end on September 19th, but there is no guarantee pre-orders will receive the phone on launch day of September 20th.
The high demand has led to scalpers listing spots in the pre-order queue for 100-600 yuan and resales of pre-ordered phones for at least 20,000 yuan on second hand markets.
The strong pre-orders steal some thunder from Apple’s upcoming iPhone launch event on September 10th and show Huawei’s leading position in the foldable market in China.
China is the world’s largest market for foldables, accounting for half of global shipments in Q2 2024, with mainland shipments reaching over 7 million units in 2023.
The large pre-orders indicate continued consumer demand and interest in more advanced foldable designs from Huawei, as they aim to build experience in this category.
