US issues fresh Iran sanctions over alleged human rights violations

The US issued new sanctions against 12 individuals in Iran over alleged human rights violations.
The sanctions target members of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and Iranian prison officials involved in cracking down on protests in Iran.
The IRGC and other security forces have used lethal force against peaceful protesters in cities across Iran after the death of Mahsa Amini in custody in 2022.
The sanctions are being coordinated with similar sanctions from Australia and Canada against those responsible for human rights violations in Iran.
The US State Department says these sanctions support human rights in Iran and come two years after Mahsa Amini’s death, which sparked nationwide protests.
The new sanctions designate IRGC units and individuals involved in violence against protesters, arresting people for political expression, and repressing prisoners protesting living conditions with violence.
