Glowing Frog on a Glowing Mushroom Wins Science Photo Competition

A photo titled “Glowing Frog on a Glowing Mushroom” won the People’s Choice Award at the Beaker Street Science Photography Prize 2024 in Tasmania.

The photo shows a blue-glowing tree frog sitting on a bioluminescent funnel-shaped mushroom known as a ghost fungus.

The frog’s blue glow is caused by biofluorescence – its chemical skin absorbs and re-emits light at a different wavelength.

Photographer Toby Schrapel discovered the two glowing organisms together on a pine plantation in Tasmania.

Andrea Williamson won the Judge’s Choice award for her photo documenting endangered red handfish development in captivity.
The Beaker Street Science Photography Prize showcases photos related to science. It is part of the Beaker Street Festival in Tasmania celebrating science.
