Switched on for the first time the largest wind turbine in history: an unexpected effect and 500,000 ft²

China has commissioned the world’s largest wind turbine, with a capacity of 20MW. It is located off the coast of Hainan province in the South China Sea.
The turbine was built by Mingyang Smart Energy and covers an unprecedented area of 500,000 square feet. Its three blades have a rotor diameter of 260-292 meters, much larger than previous turbines.
The 20MW turbine sets several new records – it has the largest capacity and rotor diameter of any wind turbine built to date. It was also designed to withstand high winds and typhoons up to Category 17.
The modular and lightweight design of the turbine allows for more efficient energy production even in challenging offshore conditions. Carbon fiber materials were used to help achieve its large size.
Mingyang plans to develop an even larger 22MW turbine by 2025, continuing to push the boundaries of offshore wind technology and capacity. This project demonstrates China’s leadership in deploying large-scale renewable energy infrastructure.
