Bottled water contains harmful contaminants, experts warn. Here are safer ways to hydrate.

Experts are warning that bottled water may contain harmful contaminants like microplastics, phthalates, PFAS, BPA and more in between 10-78% of samples tested. These contaminants can negatively impact health.
Microplastics in particular were found in bottled water at levels 100 times higher than previously thought, and they have been linked to inflammation, metabolic issues, and other health problems.
While bottled water is necessary in places without clean tap water, experts say the benefits of bottled water over tap water in many developed nations are overstated due to effective water regulations and testing of municipal water supplies.
However, some locations like Flint, Michigan have highlighted issues with tap water quality in some parts of the US. Bottled water may be preferable in these situations.
Safer alternatives to bottled water include drinking from reusable glass or stainless steel bottles, or using thicker “high quality” plastic single-use bottles with recycling codes #1 or #2. Clear plastic is also relatively safer for occasional single-use.
