The US military recently released photos showing an F-35 fighter jet carrying two AGM-158C Long-Range Anti-Ship Missiles (LRASM) during a test flight. This represented the first time an F-35 was photographed armed with LRASM missiles.
The LRASM is a stealthy, precision-guided missile used to attack ships from long ranges. Integrating it with the F-35 expands the jet’s capabilities against naval targets.
The photo and recent testing reflect the US military’s increased focus on developing anti-ship weapons, especially as countries like China expand their navies.
While the F-35 cannot carry LRASM internally due to its size, carrying it externally on the wings compromises stealth somewhat but significantly enhances the jet’s firepower.
Testing will provide data to support certifying the LRASM for use on F-35s. Giving the jets an anti-ship weapon is important as they currently have no dedicated anti-naval missile.
The integration of LRASM with the F-35 demonstrates efforts to spread advanced long-range anti-ship capabilities across new aircraft as the military emphasizes counter-navy capabilities.
