Johann Wadephul, a defense policy expert and deputy head of the opposition CDU/CSU parliamentary group in Germany’s Bundestag, spoke to DW about the situation in Israel and Lebanon.
Wadephul said that Germany is closely monitoring the situation and that tensions are high given recent developments.
Wadephul argued that more pressure needs to be put on Hezbollah and Iran. He said both are threatening Israel’s existence and destabilizing the entire region.
According to Wadephul, the EU must tighten its sanctions on Hezbollah, as the group is backed by Iran and endangering overall security in the Middle East.
He called on the EU to clearly label Hezbollah’s military wing as a terrorist organization, as the US and others have done, in order to step up political pressure on Iran and Hezbollah.
In summary, the German lawmaker pushed for stronger EU measures against Hezbollah and Iran in response to rising tensions in Israel and Lebanon. He said more pressure on these two actors is needed to stabilize the Middle East region.
