Scientists Discover ‘Skinny Genes’ That Make It Easier to Lose Weight

Scientists from the University of Essex and Anglia Ruskin University conducted a study to investigate if genetic factors influence individual weight loss in response to exercise. They recruited 38 volunteers between ages 23-40, dividing them into a control group and exercise group. The exercise group did three 20-30 minute runs per week for two months.

As expected, the exercise group lost weight, but the amount lost varied significantly. Through DNA testing, the researchers identified variants in 14 genes associated with greater weight loss. On average, participants with most of these gene variants lost 11 pounds, compared to 4.4 pounds for those with fewer variants.

One highlighted gene, PPARGC1A, is involved in energy processing and management. Having variants in this and other genes along with exercise predicted 62% of weight loss variance. This emphasizes weight loss success depends on both genetic and lifestyle factors. While genes don’t guarantee weight loss, they can influence exercise effectiveness, supporting personalized programs. The findings also link some genes to both weight control and mental health conditions like depression.

In summary, the study provides evidence that specific genetic factors play a role in individual differences in weight lost through exercise, but effort is still needed to realize potential benefits.
