Forever (https://www.sciencealert.com/forever-chemicals-may-damage-kidney-function-evidence-shows) chemicals, also known as PFAS, are persistent pollutants found in the environment, waterways, and even our bloodstreams. These chemicals are used in various products like non-stick cookware, fabrics, cosmetics, and food packaging.
A recent study suggests that exposure to these forever chemicals may be impacting kidney health. The research involved 78 young adults (aged 17-22) and found that those with higher exposure to seven different PFAS showed signs of relatively poorer kidney function four years later.
Researchers discovered that alterations in the gut microbiome, particularly a decline in beneficial bacteria and anti-inflammatory metabolites, explained a significant part of the reduced kidney function associated with PFAS exposure. These changes in the gut microbiome may potentially lead to inflammation and oxidative stress.
While this study was small, it provides evidence that exposure to these persistent pollutants could be damaging kidney health, even in young adults. Further research is needed to fully understand the mechanisms by which PFAS might impair kidney function.
