Is (https://www.sciencealert.com/scientists-reveal-how-much-sleep-you-need-for-successful-aging) Sleep the Key to Successful Aging?
A new study involving 3,306 participants aged 45 and older explored the impact of sleep on aging. Researchers tracked their sleep habits from 2011 to 2015 and assessed their health in 2020, aiming to understand how sleep influences “successful aging.”
But what does “successful aging” mean? According to the researchers, it’s about staying free from major chronic diseases, maintaining physical and cognitive abilities, having good mental health, and actively engaging with life.
Surprising Results:
By 2020, only 13.8% of participants (455 individuals) met all the criteria for successful aging. Of those, about two-thirds consistently got more than 7 hours of sleep per night.
Interestingly, those who consistently slept 8-9 hours each night had a significantly higher chance (around 18%) of aging successfully. In contrast, participants with sleep patterns that decreased, increased, or remained short (5-6 hours) had a 36-52% lower likelihood of experiencing successful aging.
Takeaway:
The researchers concluded that consistent, adequate sleep (7-9 hours per night) is crucial for healthy aging. On the other hand, chronic sleep deprivation or fluctuating sleep patterns can be significant barriers to successful aging.
