The Northern Lights (aurora borealis) were visible further south than usual on the night of May 10th-11th, 2024. This was due to an unusually strong solar storm hitting Earth.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration issued a rare severe geomagnetic storm warning as the solar outburst reached Earth on the afternoon of May 10th, hours earlier than anticipated.
Experts predicted the Northern Lights could be seen as far south as Alabama. Residents in parts of Tennessee and Mississippi were able to see the lights and took photos of the colorful display.
Areas where photos were captured and submitted to the news site included Byhalia, Mississippi, Fayette County, Tennessee, Tiptonville, Williston, Potts Camp, Braden, and Hornsby in Tennessee.
The strong solar storm had the potential to disrupt power grids and communications systems on Earth according to experts. But the main effect was allowing more people than usual in the southeastern US to view the Northern Lights phenomenon.
