SpaceX conducted a test flight of its Starship spacecraft where it launched to space and returned to Earth, splashing down in the ocean. This was a big step towards reusability.
However, visible damage was observed to the spacecraft during its high-speed reentry and descent. Specifically, one of the robotic fins started ripping off midway through descent.
As it continued falling, debris clouded the onboard camera lens, which eventually cracked under extreme heat and conditions. The view became dark and cloudy.
Despite the damage, SpaceX confirmed Starship fired its engines in an attempt to maneuver to a soft landing in the ocean. The full extent of damage is unknown as SpaceX does not plan to recover it.
Returning from space through Earth’s atmosphere is an extremely challenging experience, with heat and forces that can shred a spacecraft. SpaceX views this as an important test.
Elon Musk called it a victory, saying Starship landed softly in the ocean despite losing tiles and damage, demonstrating progress on reusability which is key to SpaceX’s long-term Mars plans.
