Canadian actor Donald Sutherland, known for roles in films like The Hunger Games and Klute, has died at the age of 88 after a long illness.
His son Kiefer Sutherland confirmed the news and called his father “one of the most important actors in the history of film.”
Sutherland had a career spanning over 50 years with nearly 200 acting credits. Some of his most notable roles were in 1970s films like The Dirty Dozen, Kelly’s Heroes and MAS*H.
He also starred in films like Klute, The Eagle Has Landed, Invasion of the Body Snatchers and Ordinary People. More recently he appeared in TV shows like Dirty Sexy Money and Commander-in-Chief.
Sutherland was never nominated for an Oscar but received an honorary Academy Award in 2017. He was known for his political activism and took on roles reflecting his beliefs.
Tributes poured in from actors like Cary Elwes and Ron Howard who praised Sutherland’s talent and presence. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also paid tribute to the beloved Canadian actor.
Sutherland’s memoir is set to be published in November. He had said recently he had no plans to retire from acting.
