Which artificial sweetener is the safest choice?

There is no scientific consensus on which artificial sweetener is safest. More research is still needed to understand their long-term health effects.
Some studies have linked sweeteners like aspartame, sucralose and sugar alcohols like xylitol and erythritol to increased risk of heart disease, but the evidence is observational and needs confirmation from clinical trials.
Ongoing trials are directly comparing different sweeteners’ effects on blood glucose, gut health, heart risks and weight gain. Early results suggest high doses of xylitol and erythritol may raise heart attack/stroke risk by affecting blood platelet stickiness.
Natural sweeteners like stevia still undergo extensive processing. All sweeteners have pros and cons, and replacing sugar may not necessarily be better depending on amounts and food sources.
Experts say the best approach is to minimize all added sugars and artificial sweeteners by focusing on whole, minimally processed foods and enjoying occasional treats in moderation. More research is still needed to provide clearer advice on sweetener safety.
