Iran claims it does not want to escalate regional tensions, but must ‘punish’ Israel

Iran claimed that while it does not want to escalate regional tensions, it must punish Israel for a recent drone attack on an Iranian-linked base in Syria.
An Iranian military adviser said the attack will not be left unanswered as Israel must be punished for its “evil acts.” However, he said Iran doesn’t want the situation to escalate out of control.
Israel has not confirmed or denied carrying out the drone attack, which killed two people. But it has frequently struck Iranian targets in Syria in recent years to prevent arms transfers to Hezbollah.
Tensions have risen between Iran and Israel after a series of alleged Israeli strikes. Iran has promised revenge for the killing of Revolutionary Guard General Qasem Soleimani in a US drone strike earlier this year.
The adviser said Iran will choose the appropriate time and place to retaliate against Israel, but will avoid increases in regional conflicts. He said Israel alone will be held responsible for the consequences of its actions.
