– Scientists have discovered a huge hidden ocean under the surface of Mars using data from NASA’s InSight lander.
– The ocean is estimated to contain enough water to cover the whole planet in about 1 mile (1.6 km) of water. It is located between 11-20 km below the surface, trapped under fractured rock.
– Reaching this underground reservoir is currently impossible with existing technology, requiring drilling far deeper than has been achieved on Earth.
– However, the presence of water raises the possibility that this location could harbor life. Water is necessary for life as we know it. Researchers believe the environment should theoretically be able to support life.
– The discovery helps explain where Mars’ surface water went. Billions of years ago the planet was wet but the water disappeared. It likely seeped underground into this reservoir rather than escaping into space.
– Finding accessible water is a key goal for determining the potential for life elsewhere in the solar system and making other planets inhabitable.
