Iran shuts down the last language institute recognized by the German Embassy

Iran shut down the last language institute in Tehran that was recognized by the German embassy. This was seen as retaliation for Germany shutting down an Islamic center in Hamburg that it accused of being an outpost of Iran’s leadership.
The Iranian institute, called the Institute For Teaching German Language, had been operating in Tehran since 1995 under certification from the German embassy. Iranian authorities said it violated laws and had financial issues.
Germany had shut down the Islamic Center Hamburg and some related organizations in July, accusing it of promoting Iran’s ideology and supporting Hezbollah militants. German police also raided other properties.
Tensions have risen between Iran and Israel/Hezbollah since an ongoing war broke out between Israel and Hamas in Gaza last month. Iran supports anti-Israeli militant groups.
Germany condemned the closure of the language institute, saying language exchange promotes mutual understanding. It summoned Iran’s ambassador and called on Iran to allow the teaching to resume.
