Telegram app founder and CEO Pavel Durov was arrested at Bourget airport outside Paris on Saturday evening.
He was reportedly traveling aboard his private jet when he was arrested based on an outstanding warrant in France.
Durov is the 39-year-old billionaire Russian entrepreneur who founded Telegram messenger app and is based in Dubai where the company is also headquartered.
French TV channel TF1 reported about the arrest, citing an unnamed source. Durov was expected to appear in court on Sunday.
Details about the arrest warrant or reason for it have not been disclosed. The Russian embassy in France is seeking to clarify the situation.
Durov previously left Russia in 2014 after refusing government demands to shut down VK social media communities during political protests.
Telegram is one of the most popular messaging apps worldwide with 900 million active users and is known for offering secure encryption and information channels.
