– It has been two years since massive protests known as the “Woman Life Freedom” uprising took place in Iran against oppression and gender-based discrimination.
– Iranian authorities brutally cracked down on the protests, unlawfully killing hundreds and injuring many through excessive force including live ammunition. No independent investigations have been conducted.
– Impunity reigns as victims and families have been denied truth and justice. The authorities are also continuing their assault on human rights through intensified enforcement of compulsory veiling laws.
– Enforcers like the Moral Police have been chasing, assaulting, and imprisoning women who defy the veiling laws. The use of torture and even the death penalty has increased against dissent.
– During the protests, security forces committed widespread torture and even sexual violence against detainees including rape and gang rape, but authorities deny and cover this up.
– Two women human rights defenders have recently been sentenced to death on political charges. The authorities continue to evade justice through denial and refusal to cooperate with UN investigations.
