UN-appointed experts have accused Iran of stepping up repression of women’s rights in recent months.
They said Iran has increasingly targeted women who protested the mandatory hijab rule and cracked down on female human rights defenders and lawyers.
Activists say Iran is using “abusive enforcement” of its compulsory hijab law, with increased arrests and violence by security forces against women who violate the dress code.
The UN experts said Iran imposed harsh prison sentences on prominent women’s rights defenders, including up to 43.5 years imprisonment for a women’s rights activist. They accused Iran’s security forces of using techniques like beatings, electric shocks and solitary confinement against women detained for protesting against the mandatory hijab.
The experts called on Iran to immediately stop targeting, harassing, and arresting women defending their human rights, cease enforcement of compulsory hijab, and review discriminatory laws and amend the country’s constitution.
