India has condemned comments made by Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei regarding the treatment of Muslims in India. Khamenei had called said Muslims cannot consider themselves Muslims if oblivious to the suffering of Muslims in places like India.
In response, India’s foreign ministry strongly deplored Khamenei’s comments, saying countries commenting on minorities should look at their own records first before making observations about others.
However, India and Iran typically share strong relations. They signed a 10-year deal in May to develop and operate the Iranian port of Chabahar. India is developing this port to transport goods to Iran and other countries, bypassing ports in rival Pakistan.
Khamenei has been critical of India in the past over issues involving Indian Muslims and the Kashmir region. Despite tensions, cooperation on the Chabahar port continues between the two countries.
