Switzerland has unveiled a new supercomputer called “Alps” at the National Supercomputing Centre in Lugano.
Economics Minister Guy Parmelin officially inaugurated the new supercomputer on September 14th, 2024.
“Alps” is one of the most powerful supercomputers in the world, ranked as the 6th fastest in the Top 500 list from June 2024. It is expected to climb even higher in performance.
The supercomputer will be used for weather forecasting by MeteoSwiss, as well as calculations for climatology and artificial intelligence.
It can perform the calculations a standard laptop could do in 40,000 years in just one day, according to the Deputy Director of the Swiss National Supercomputing Centre.
“Alps” will support research in key areas like weather prediction, climate modeling and artificial intelligence.
It reinforces Switzerland’s role at the cutting edge of supercomputing technology.
